D.K. Bhaskar is fascinated by the whole wide world. A peek into his gallery of pictures essentially celebrates the joy of discovering the world through is lens. From the heart of the Amazon basin to the world’s biggest festival in Mumbai or the mystical journey across the Cozumel channel to a phenomenal journey to the Arctic circle, his award-winning imagery appear in publications including BBC, Berlitz, Popular Photography, WWF, Wildlife Conservation Society, Discover, Blackwell, Podroze, Jetwings and LiveMint. His work has been featured in more than 10 books, including “Living Elephants” and "Colors of Rajasthan”. He has authored a book titled "Impressions of Brazilian Amazonia" with a foreword from the Ambassador for Brazil in India.
“I live in a virtual world and my motivation is to capture and share extraordinary images with people”, says Bhaskar, in the midst of his numerous travels capturing the cultures, personas and the natural world. Born in Mysore, India, the country of extraordinary cultural ethos and a mind-boggling array of diversity most of his education was in rural Karnataka. His romance with the natural world began with sojourns to neighbouring agricultural fields. His horizons broadened as he traveled far and wide in search of visions that captivated him. His young, adventurous spirit was identified and honored with the prestigious President's Scout medal from Indian President Giani Zail Singh. He went on to pursue his education and graduated as a Mechanical engineer.
Although a keen nature lover, Bhaskar was not a serious photographer until the early 2000s, at which time he was employed as an education technologist in a leading research center at Bangalore. Scientific and cultural expeditions to England, Scotland, Brazil, Peru and Bolivia helped him mature into a seasoned naturalist and an artist with exceptional creativity. During the past several years, Bhaskar has collaborated with scientists, writers, politicians, policy makers amongst others in various capacities and documented the diversity of changing landscapes, built travel portfolios and captured the indomitable spirit of life in totality.
Bhaskar has many experiences to share as a natural history photographer. Some interesting experiences include being chased by elephants until he found an electric tower for survival, being attacked by a rhino and even being kidnapped by militants. His work has received critical acclaim and he has won numerous accolades including Raleigh International Photographer (UK), finalist for Wanderlust Photographer of the Year (UK) and finalist for Photographer's Forum Award (USA). Bhaskar has been invited to exhibit his photographs at exhibitions in more than 45 venues in different parts of the world.
“Travel and Photography is my passion”, says Bhaskar. “I find solace while being wanderlust amongst the streets and the remote villages; amongst diverse cultures and societies. My favorite times however are those that I spend in the company of Mother Nature. She is so caring and is forever giving away her riches to us. It has always been my humble intention to give back a fraction of what I have borrowed from her. It is for this reason that I love to educate and inspire the young children and people young at heart to love and care for the natural world.”
With his great passion for photography, he is the founder of Augusta International Photography festival, a four day international event held every June at Augusta, home of the Masters. Bhaskar’s endeavors are supported by Nikon Inc, Lexar and other supporters.
